Sexual orientation refers to a person’s lasting emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to one or more genders. Although one sexual orientation is not superior or inferior to another, there is a low level of acceptance of sexual minorities among Chinese citizens. In recent years, wide attention has been attracted to the causes of human sexual orientation not only in the LGBTQ community, but also in the political and academic communities.

We have invited Li Gu, Ph.D. in Psychology from Cambridge University, to explain the causes of sexual orientation from a scientific perspective. He will review findings from past research and discuss primarily the influence of prenatal factors on sexual orientation. These factors include genes, levels of prenatal androgen exposure, maternal immune systems, etc. In addition, Gu will examine myths on the impact of postnatal factors, including same-sex parenting, single-sex environments (e.g., single-sex schools), and sexual orientation change efforts.

Li Gu will then introduce latest Western perspectives on sexual fluidity. Finally, he will discuss the legal implications of the studies on sexual orientation, reflecting on the appropriateness of using existing evidence to support legislation for equal rights. On June 24, let us delve with Li Gu into the causes of sexual orientation and the legal rights of sexual minorities.
